Local teachers on the water at Penzance Sailing Club

Last Monday saw teachers from Mounts Bay, Humphry Davy and Cape Cornwall Schools converge on Penzance Sailing Club for the first of what will hopefully become an annual sailing event.

The 22 teachers were divided between 12 yachts, with each school having four yachts making up their team. The main aim of the evening was to have fun but with so many teachers on the water and the pride of the schools at stake, the heat was on!

In charge of the proceeding for the evening was the sailing club’s Youth Committee, headed by Katherine Sharp. The youth committee, with representatives from each of the local schools, were the “impartial” judges for the evening. After a quick briefing the competitors were out on the water and boats were off. In light winds the fleet made steady progress across the bay with the lead changing on many occasions.

After 90 minutes of sailing, the course was shortened to finish at the Mount. 4Play took line honours for Humphry Davy School however; they were closely followed by Rainbow coming in first on handicap for Mounts Bay School and Out on a Limbo for Cape Cornwall just moments behind.

Back in the clubhouse the results announced which just went to show how close the competition had been. In first place were Mounts Bay (15 points), followed in second by Humphry Davy (17 points) and third went to Cape Cornwall (18 points).

A great event was had by, with a total of 90 sailors on the water during the evening! A big thank you to everyone who made it happen and to the boat owners for accommodating the extra crew.
